A man named Andrew Gower began trading under the name Jagex Ltd in 1999. Jagex Ltd. Is a company based in the United Kingdom which produces Java-based online computer games. Jagex Ltd. or Jagex Software was described by Andrew Gower as a ‘small software company based in England who specialise in producing top-quality Java games for webpages’. This would tie in well with the explanation Paul Gower, Andrew’s brother, gave about what Jagex stands for; Java gaming experts.
Jagex Ltd. is known best for their popular MMORPG, RuneScape. RuneScape first became widely popular in December of 2001 when Andrew, Paul and Constant Tedder decided to boost the performance of the games that Andrew had developed. The massive multiplayer game is based around managing a single character which you level up in experience over a range of different skills and you applies these skills to quests and mini games as well as excelling the rich and diverse economy of Runescape.
After just one year after the launch of RuneScape, Jagex had over one million free accounts registered and were in the first stages of the creation of a paid version of the game which would supply extra features to people who subscribed for a fee of $5USD a month. There was also an aim to create partnerships with top advertisers which would be run on the free version of the game. Both of these aims have been achieved with membership (or pay-to-play) in RuneScape being released on 27th February 2002. With over 5,000 subscribers within the first week of the membership launch, RuneScape became one of the largest Java games in the whole world. Now RuneScape have over 9,000,000 free-to-play users and over 1,000,000 pay-to-play users, making it the second most profitable online game behind Blizzard’s world of Warcraft and skyrocketing both Paul and Andrew Gower into the UK Top 100 rich list, with them both now being estimated at being worth over $100 million USD each.
Since 2001 Jagex currently have offices in London, Cambridge and a Head Office in Manchester. In the past year Jagex have grow their number of employees to over 300 in different departments from Web Content to Game Development. They also won an award in 2006 for being one of the Top 100 companies to work for. Now with 140 RuneScape servers located around many parts of the world, RuneScape just keeps on expanding!
Now, Jagex Ltd. has the aim of appealing to a world-wide audience. They have already translated RuneScape into a German and available in beta version. This addition was released on 7th March 2007. No doubt Jagex has many more upgrades and improvements in store for Runescape and who know one day they release a Runescape 3 beta. That said they aren't just focused on Runescape, they also plan on using their own programs to build more Java-based online games. Jagex not only run RuneScape but a few mini Java-based games. These games can be found on the company’s corporate website http://www.jagex.com and are as follows:
• Meltdown
• Vertigo
• Flea Circus
• Gold Mine
• Monkey Puzzle
More of these games have been said to be being released in interviews with the staff but there has been no official confirmation of this.
